Hawks Swept by Saints for Second Straight Day, Service Errors Prove Costly

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team was swept by Maryville for the second straight day, falling in three sets (25-19, 27-25, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena. The Hawks were undone by 18 service errors, which proved costly in key moments throughout the match.

Maryville came out strong, scoring the first three points and five of the first six to seize early momentum. The Saints' defense set the tone with two early blocks while also forcing multiple Quincy hitting errors.

Despite trailing early, the Hawks battled to stay within reach as the Saints held a 13-10 lead midway through the set. Maryville then created separation with a three-point run before extending the margin even further. A stretch that included a Quincy error, a service ace, and a solo block pushed the score to 21-12.

Quincy continued to fight late in the set, but a Maryville kill ultimately closed it out as the Saints took set one 25-19. Maryville hit .296 with 12 kills and four errors, while Quincy recorded 11 kills with six errors for a .192 hitting percentage.

The Hawks responded in set two with one of their strongest offensive performances of the match. Quincy jumped out to a 7-4 lead behind a pair of kills from Barnabas Fenyvesi and Isaiah Travis and maintained a slight edge through the middle portion of the set.

After an error by the Saints, Quincy won the race to 20 and held a 20-17 advantage. However, Maryville answered with a 6-1 run, capitalizing on four Quincy errors to take a 23-21 lead, its first lead since the opening point.

Quincy showed resilience, scoring three straight points to regain the lead and earn set point at 25-24. Alex Barkley sparked the offense with back-to-back kills during the run. But the Saints responded once again, scoring the final three points behind two Quincy errors and a kill to steal the set 27-25.

The Hawks hit an impressive .400 with 17 kills and just three errors, while Maryville hit .250 with 13 kills and five errors.

Maryville once again grabbed control early in the third set, jumping out to a 7-4 lead and never relinquishing it. A decisive 8-2 run extended the Saints' lead to 15-8, putting Quincy in a difficult position.

The Hawks attempted to rally with a pair of late three-point runs, but the deficit proved too much to overcome. A service error by Quincy ended the match as Maryville secured the sweep with a 25-20 win.

The Saints delivered their most efficient offensive set of the match, hitting a remarkable .609 with 16 kills and just two errors, while Quincy hit .333 with 13 kills and three errors.
