Quincy Capitalizes on Turnovers in 61–56 Win at Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. – Quincy returned to the win column Saturday afternoon with a gritty 61–56 road victory over the Miners of Missouri S&T, completing the season sweep.

Neither side found much offensive rhythm as the teams combined for 40 turnovers and shot just 34.5 percent from the field. Quincy's ability to capitalize on turnovers proved to be the difference in a hard-fought contest.

Hampton Williams jump-started the Hawks with a jumper on the opening possession, but offense was hard to come by early, as Quincy's next field goal did not come until Hayven Harden finished a layup at the 3:43 mark.

Despite the drought, the Hawks stayed within striking distance as the Miners committed five turnovers during the stretch. Quincy closed the quarter strong, knocking down three of its final four shots to tie the game at 12–12.

The opening frame featured 12 total turnovers, with each team making five field goals and one three-pointer in an uneven start.

The scoring struggles continued early in the second, with the first points coming on Katey Flynn's free throws at the 7:39 mark.

Quincy responded with a 9–3 run over the next two and a half minutes, fueled by a Blair Eftink three-pointer and six points from Williams, giving the Hawks their largest lead to that point at 23–15.

S&T answered with a 6–0 run, but Quincy closed the half on a 6–2 surge to take a 29–23 lead into the break. The Hawks made their mark at the free-throw line, going 10-for-12 in the quarter.

The teams traded baskets through the opening five minutes of the third, with Quincy maintaining its edge while S&T stayed within one possession.

The Miners leaned heavily on free throws late in the quarter, shooting 8-for-8 over the final five minutes, but the Hawks held a slim 46–45 advantage heading into the fourth. Quincy shot 8-of-14 from the field in the period, its most efficient quarter offensively.

Scoring was scarce early in the final frame, with just one point scored in the first three minutes. Williams broke the field-goal drought at the 6:59 mark, and Eftink followed with her second three-pointer of the game to push the lead to 51–46.

With the Hawks clinging to a one-point lead late, Quincy put together a crucial 6–0 run, highlighted by four more points from Williams, to go ahead 59–52 with just over three minutes remaining.

Quincy struggled to close the game offensively, going 0-for-3 from the field and 2-for-6 at the free-throw line down the stretch, but Missouri S&T was unable to take advantage, finishing 0-for-3 from the field with two costly turnovers, as the Hawks secured the 61–56 victory and extended their winning streak in the series to seven straight.

Both teams struggled offensively throughout the afternoon, as Quincy shot 36.4 percent from the field, 21.1 percent from three, and 60.7 percent at the free-throw line. Missouri S&T finished at 32.7 percent shooting, 12.5 percent from deep, and 75.0 percent at the line. The Miners controlled the glass with a 49–28 rebounding advantage, including 19 offensive rebounds, but Quincy forced 26 turnovers and converted them into 26 points, proving to be the difference.

Williams led Quincy with 14 points, marking the third time this season she has paced the team in scoring. Karly Peters added 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Acheampomaa Danso scored 12 points and added two steals in just 18 minutes despite foul trouble.

Quincy will return home to Pepsi Arena on Thursday, February 12, to take on the Lincoln Blue Tigers, a team the Hawks defeated 64–47 earlier this season. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
