Fast Start by Northwood Too Much to Overcome in 17-11 Loss

MIDLAND, Mich. – Quincy University men's lacrosse battled back from an early deficit but could not overcome a fast start by Northwood, falling 17-11 Saturday afternoon at Dean Field.

Northwood opened the game with six unanswered goals in the first quarter, capitalizing on an extra-man opportunity and strong offensive pressure to take a 6-0 lead after one.

The Hawks found momentum in the second quarter. Sean Usher put Quincy on the board at the 11:46 mark, and freshman Cooper Karedes added another to cut into the deficit with his first collegiate goal. After Northwood pushed the lead to 9-2, Quincy closed the half with two late goals from Seve Cordero and Eli Cowan to make it 9-4 at the break.

Northwood responded in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 5-2 to extend its lead to 14-6 heading into the final frame.

Quincy showed resilience in the fourth quarter, scoring five times. Cowan opened the period scoring before goals from Usher and Haakon Steen trimmed the deficit to six. Mason Luoma and Cordero added late tallies as the Hawks continued to push, but Northwood answered to secure the 17-11 final.

Northwood held a slight advantage offensively, outshooting Quincy 38-31 and putting 25 shots on goal compared to the Hawks' 22. The Timberwolves controlled possession throughout the afternoon, winning the faceoff battle 21-11 and collecting 59 ground balls to Quincy's 41.

In transition, Northwood was more efficient on clears, finishing 21-of-23, while Quincy went 17-of-26. Special teams also played a role, as Northwood converted three of six extra-man opportunities, while the Hawks were unable to capitalize on their two chances.

Seve Cordero led Quincy with three goals on nine shots. Cowan added two goals and an assist, while Sean Usher recorded two goals. Luoma, Steen, and Karedes each scored, with Karedes also adding an assist. Jameson Essen paced the Hawks with two assists, and goalkeeper Austin Vetter made eight saves in 60 minutes.
