KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Quincy opened the 2026 season Thursday night with a 22-9 road loss to Rockhurst at Bourke Field. After a competitive opening quarter, Rockhurst created separation with a six-goal second period and never relinquished control. The Hawks were outshot 61-29 and trailed 11-3 at halftime after the decisive second-quarter run.
Rockhurst jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes before
Mason Luoma put the Hawks on the board midway through the first quarter. Quincy quickly gained momentum when Davenport transfer
Seve Cordero scored on the extra-man opportunity for his first goal in a Quincy uniform, and Luoma added his second of the quarter to trim the deficit to 4-3. The Hawks stayed within one late in the period, but Rockhurst struck in the final minute to carry a 5-3 lead into the second.
The second quarter proved to be the turning point. Rockhurst controlled possession at the faceoff dot and capitalized on penalties, scoring three extra-man goals during a six-goal run that pushed the lead to 11-3 by halftime.
Quincy answered early in the third quarter when Cordero scored his second of the game, and
Sean Usher followed with his first goal of the season to stop another Rockhurst push. After Rockhurst extended the margin,
Eli Cowan scored late in the quarter to make it 15-6 heading into the fourth.
In the final period,
Jameson Essen converted a man-up opportunity off a Cordero assist, and
Ronan Cripe netted the first goal of his collegiate career. Cowan added a late tally in the closing seconds as the Hawks continued to battle despite the deficit.
Cordero, Luoma, and Cowan each finished with two goals to lead Quincy. Essen added a goal and an assist, and
Haakon Steen recorded an assist. Goalkeeper
Austin Vetter made 20 saves as Rockhurst placed 42 shots on goal.
Rockhurst controlled possession metrics throughout the night, winning faceoffs 26-9 and holding a 45-28 edge in ground balls. Quincy limited mistakes with just 13 turnovers and converted 2-of-3 extra-man opportunities, but the shot disparity and extended defensive pressure prevented sustained offensive rhythm.
Quincy returns to action Saturday, February 21, traveling to Midland, Michigan, to face Northwood University. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 11:00 AM as the Hawks look to secure their first win of the season.
