QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team battled early but could not slow a red-hot shooting performance from Southwest Baptist University, as the Bearcats pulled away in the second half for an 84–58 victory inside Pepsi Arena on Saturday afternoon.
How It Happened
Southwest Baptist set the tone from the opening tip, jumping out to an early advantage behind efficient interior scoring and quick ball movement. The Bearcats connected on six of their first eight field-goal attempts to build a 14–5 lead.
Quincy responded midway through the half behind a spark from deep.
Camren Kincaid,
Ethyn Brown, and Herbert Martin III each knocked down three-pointers to help the Hawks chip away at the deficit and settle into a rhythm offensively. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, and a late push kept Quincy within striking distance at halftime, trailing 41–31.
Despite shooting an efficient 50 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from three in the first half, turnovers and second-chance opportunities allowed Southwest Baptist to maintain control.
Coming out of the break, the Bearcats' offense found another gear. Southwest Baptist shot better than 60 percent in the second half and stretched the floor with consistent perimeter shooting, knocking down seven more threes.
Their tempo and spacing created open looks that Quincy struggled to contest, and the lead steadily grew into double digits.
The Hawks continued to compete on the glass and generated second-chance points, but the Bearcats' balanced scoring and hot shooting proved too much to overcome down the stretch as they secured the 84–58 win.
Herbert Martin III paced Quincy with 12 points, while
Tiernan Stynes added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Ethyn Brown and
Ethan Bolton chipped in eight points apiece. As a team, the Hawks shot 43.6 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three, while the Bearcats held a 29–22 edge on the boards.
Quincy will look to bounce back on Wednesday when the Hawks travel to Springfield, Missouri, to face Drury University at the O'Reilly Family Event Center with tipoff set for 7:45 PM.
