Third-Quarter Surge Lifts Hawks Past Rockhurst, 64–48

QUINCY, Ill. – It was a battle of the Hawks inside Pepsi Arena, and it was Quincy who pulled away for a convincing 64–48 victory over Rockhurst University on Thursday night. Quincy held Rockhurst to an ice-cold 31.5 percent shooting from the field and used a dominant third quarter to secure its second straight win.

Both teams struggled to find an early rhythm, but Quincy opened with a 5–0 lead behind a triple from Katey Flynn and a jumper from Acheampomaa Danso. That would be the only scoring for either side through the first five minutes before Rockhurst answered with a layup and a three-point play to tie the game at five.

Quincy responded with a quick 9–0 run over a two-minute span, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field as four different Hawks scored to take a 14–5 advantage. The final two minutes mirrored the opening stretch, with limited offense from both sides. Rockhurst knocked down a late three, but Quincy carried a 15–8 lead into the second quarter.

Despite the low scoring, Quincy shot 50 percent in the opening frame while Rockhurst managed just 3-of-13 shooting.

The second quarter was choppy, with frequent stoppages of play. Quincy eventually found its footing at the 6:44 mark when Blair Eftink buried a three to spark a 7–0 run, pushing the lead to 22–8. For the second straight quarter, Rockhurst went more than five minutes without a field goal.

Rockhurst answered with a 13–0 run over the next three minutes to pull within one at 22–21. Quincy steadied itself late, as Hayven Harden scored inside before Hampton Williams capped the half with a half-court buzzer-beater that banked in, sending the Hawks into the break with a 29–21 advantage.

The game swung decisively in the third quarter, as Quincy took complete control. Harden opened the half with back-to-back buckets in the paint, and a Karly Peters three capped an 8–0 run to extend the lead to 16, less than three minutes into the quarter.

After Rockhurst finally got on the board, Quincy answered with a 10–2 run, fueled by eight points from Sydney Runsewe, including two triples and two free throws. The lead ballooned to 21 at 47–26 with just over three minutes remaining.

Quincy closed the quarter strong, knocking down its final two shots, including Eftink's second three of the night. The Hawks outscored Rockhurst 23–6 in the quarter, shooting 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, while holding Rockhurst to just 2-for-15 shooting. Quincy led 52–27 heading into the fourth.

Rockhurst opened the final period with its best stretch of the game, using an 8–0 run on perfect shooting to trim the deficit to 17. The early surge, however, was too little too late.

Quincy matched Rockhurst down the stretch, as Harden added six more points to help the Hawks close out a 64–48 victory.

The 48 points allowed marked Quincy's lowest defensive total of the season. Rockhurst finished the night shooting 31.5 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from three, and 57.1 percent from the free-throw line. Quincy shot 49.1 percent overall and knocked down eight triples, though the Hawks struggled at the line for the second straight game (4-for-11).

Quincy controlled the glass with a 42–27 rebounding advantage, posted a season-high 30 bench points, and matched its season high with 21 assists on 26 made field goals.

Harden led all scorers with 17 points off the bench on 8-of-13 shooting, recording her seventh double-figure scoring performance of the season while adding two blocks. Runsewe added 11 points, all off the bench, while Flynn chipped in 10. Williams narrowly missed a double-double with seven points and nine rebounds.

Quincy will look to extend its winning streak to three games when it hosts Southwest Baptist University on Saturday inside Pepsi Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
