Hawks Close Non-Conference Slate with 31–14 Road Win at Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. – Quincy University football wrapped up its non-conference schedule with an impressive 31–14 victory at Wayne State on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks controlled the game with timely scores, opportunistic defense, and a special teams spark to move to 3-1 on the year while staying unbeaten in GLVC play.

Quincy struck first in the opening quarter, capping a nine-play, 80-yard drive when freshman quarterback Bradyn Little connected with Kamrin Cox for a 31-yard touchdown strike with just seven seconds left in the frame. The Hawks added to their lead early in the second quarter as kicker Kiko Moreno split the uprights from 21 yards out to make it 10-0. Wayne State battled back before halftime, marching 75 yards and trimming the deficit to 10-7 on a short touchdown pass from Champion Edwards to Drew Hickmott, capping off a drive that took over seven and a half minutes.

In the third quarter, Little and Cox found their rhythm again. The duo hooked up on a 12-yard touchdown pass midway through the period to put Quincy ahead 17-7. The Warriors responded quickly with a 74-yard drive capped by another Edwards-to-Hickmott touchdown to close the gap to 17-14. Quincy answered early in the fourth, as Little capped an eight-play, 53-yard drive by finding Elijah Genenbacher in the end zone for a one-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 24-14. Just minutes later, the Hawks landed the knockout punch when TW Crozier electrified the field with a 50-yard punt return touchdown, his second special teams touchdown of the season and the first punt return score of his Hawk career. Moreno's extra point made it 31-14, which stood as the final margin.

The Hawks finished with 308 yards of offense, including 160 on the ground and 148 through the air. Little turned in his second career game with three touchdown passes, completing 17 of 31 throws without a turnover. Cox was again the go-to weapon, hauling in five receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the rushing attack with 70 yards on 14 carries. Genenbacher added his second career touchdown grab, and Aaron Harvey provided balance with 59 rushing yards on 10 carries.

Defensively, Quincy limited Wayne State to just 58 rushing yards and came up with key stops. Linebacker Brock Wiley paced the unit for the second straight week, registering 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Jonathan Van Hook had a career day with eight tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, while Brock Inman recorded his sixth career interception. Jacob Duke contributed six stops, and Julius Barfield added a sack to highlight a unit that tallied two sacks and six tackles for loss overall.

Special teams were pivotal in the victory. Crozier's punt return touchdown was the highlight, but punter Alex Schattin also played a key role, averaging 43.4 yards on five punts with a long of 69. Moreno was perfect on the afternoon, connecting on his lone field goal and all four extra points.

With the win, Quincy closed its non-conference slate at 2-1 and improved to 3-1 overall. The Hawks now turn their focus back to conference play, returning home for Homecoming and the annual Battle for the Land of Lincoln against in-state rival McKendree University. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, October 4, at 3:00 PM inside QU Stadium.
