SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Quincy men's soccer picked up its first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season on Friday night, blanking Illinois Springfield 2–0 at Kiwanis Stadium. The win moves the Hawks to 3–1–1 overall and 1–1–0 in conference play.
The Hawks broke through just before halftime, as senior captain
Jake Ellis delivered a well-placed ball into the box that defender
Paal Vistnes finished in the 45th minute to put Quincy ahead 1–0. Early in the second half, Quincy doubled the lead when
Grant Buer buried his first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute, giving the Hawks breathing room.
Defensively, Quincy leaned on goalkeeper
Jake Offerman, who turned in a career-best eight saves to record his second career shutout. The back line, anchored by Vistnes and Ellis, absorbed heavy UIS pressure as the Prairie Stars outshot the Hawks 13–9. Quincy countered with efficiency, putting eight of their nine attempts on frame.
Quincy also held a narrow edge in corner kicks, 6–5, while both sides battled physically, finishing with 14 fouls apiece.
The Hawks will look to carry momentum into a big test on Sunday, September 21, when they travel to Indianapolis to face the No. 8 Greyhounds at Key Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
