Quincy Men's Tennis Wraps Season with Strong Showing in GLVC Tournament Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Quincy University men's tennis team concluded its record-breaking 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 4-2 loss to University of Missouri-St. Louis in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament on Friday afternoon (May 2) at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. Despite the setback, the Hawks capped the season with a program-best 13 wins and second straight postseason appearance.

Doubles play opened the afternoon with Quincy falling behind early. The No. 2 team of Gianni Lopez and Rodrigo Coello Trevino dropped a 6-2 decision, while the No. 3 pairing of Marko Cucuk and Gerard Abad Puig also fell by the same score, allowing UMSL to secure the doubles point. The top-flight match featuring Joseph Restrepo and Inigo Villacampa was halted with the Tritons holding a narrow 5-4 edge.

Quincy responded with resilience in singles play. At the top of the lineup, Villacampa delivered a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-2, over UMSL's Alejandro Ley. Restrepo followed suit at No. 2 singles, prevailing 6-4, 6-3 to give the Hawks their second point.

However, UMSL regained momentum with victories at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Lopez fell 6-3, 6-4 on court three, while Coello Trevino was defeated 6-3, 6-2 on court five. At No. 6 singles, Pablo Mateos Niella forced a third set but ultimately came up short, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, allowing the Tritons to clinch the match.

Abad Puig's battle at No. 4 singles was left unfinished in the third set.

The match concludes a banner year for head coach Wyatt Pauley's squad, who made their second consecutive appearance in the GLVC Tournament and solidified their place among the conference's rising programs.

With the loss, Quincy ends the year with a 13-9 overall record and 2-2 mark in conference play, setting a new benchmark for future Hawks to chase.
