Hawks Walk-Off Game One in Sweep of Orediggers

QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy swept a thrilling doubleheader against the Colorado School of Mines on Saturday (Mar. 1) at QU Stadium. The Hawks walked off the Orediggers 10-9 in a twelve-inning battle in game one and followed it up with a late-inning rally in game two for an 8-6 Saturday sweep.

GAME ONE

The Orediggers struck first in the top of the second with a towering fly ball to left field that one-hopped the wall, driving in two runs. In the following inning, CSOM doubled for the lead with an RBI sac fly and an error from the Hawks' defense.

Trailing 4-0, the Hawks switched the momentum, exploding for seven runs in the bottom of the third. The offense got going with an RBI single off the glove of the Oredigger's first baseman for the Hawks's first run of the game. Two batters later, David Broughton drove in a pair with a double in the right-center gap. Quincy added two more to take the lead at 5-4 with an RBI groundout and aggressive baserunning in a first and third situation. The big shot to cap off a seven-run inning belonged to Isaiah Fudge, who hit his first career homer to the deepest part of the yard to give the Hawks a 7-4 lead after three innings.

The Hawks quickly added two more in the home half of the fourth courtesy of RBI hits from Broughton and Cole Erickson. After two scoreless frames from the Hawks's pitching staff, the Orediggers cut into the lead with a two-out, two-run single.

Heading to the final frame of play in the seventh inning, the Hawks saw their 9-6 lead evaporate. A two-run RBI single from the Orediggers designated hitter made it a one-run game, and an error on the same play advanced the tying run all the way to third base. The Orediggers were down to their final out when their shortstop sent a 3-1 shot right back up the middle to tie the game at nine apiece.

Both offenses were busy through the first seven innings, but it turned into a pitchers duel once the game entered extra innings. Kyle Manship for the Hawks and Grady Booth battled it out for both teams. Booth finished with seven scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Orediggers, and Manship tossed 5.2 scoreless frames for the Hawks.

Moving into the bottom half of the twelfth inning, a new arm came to replace Booth for the Orediggers. Broughton only needed to see one pitch from the new arm, as he jumped on a fastball and put it over the left field wall to send the Hawks happily into game two with a 10-9 victory. Broughton finished the game with three hits and four RBIs out of the three-hole.

GAME TWO

In game two, the Hawks offense wasted no time finding the scoring column, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first after an RBI groundout and an error from the Orediggers defense. Jake Vitale quickly made it 3-0 with his first home run of the 2025 campaign in the home half of the second.

Quincy right fielder Matt Mateo extended the Hawks lead to 5-0, driving in two with a single up the middle. However, the Orediggers offense, which had been very quiet for the first four innings, woke up in the fifth inning. A six spot gave CSOM its first lead of the ballgame, as the Orediggers rattled off seven hits in the inning, capped off by a two-RBI single from their center fielder.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, with six outs to spare, the Hawks regained the lead with a three spot. A run-scoring wild pitch and a clutch two-out, two RBI single from Joe Huffman gave the Hawks an 8-6 lead heading to the final frame.

Quinn Schultz was given the baseball for the Hawks, looking to close the door and earn his first career save. Schultz retired the first man of the inning via lineout. However, the Orediggers were not going down quietly, putting the tying run on base with a single. A flyout for out number two was followed by a two-out walk. The Orediggers home run leader stepped up to the plate representing the go ahead run and smacked a line drive to center field, but a great jump from Ben Dahlof and a sliding effort retired the side and earned a Saturday doubleheader sweep for the Hawks.

Quincy will be back in action tomorrow afternoon to conclude a four-game series with the Colorado School of Mines, as they look to sweep the series with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM.
