CHARLOTTE, NC. - In a fitting start to the Hawks final season as a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA), QU picked up it's first conference-opening win since defeating Lindenwood to open MIVA play back on 1/27/17, this time taking down the conference's newest member in Queens University of Charlotte in four sets (25-16, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19) on Tuesday evening (Feb. 4).
With the win, the MIVA experience comes full-circle for Hawks' skipper,
Omar Sanchez who picks up his first MIVA win at the helm of the program after having played in the conference himself for four seasons as a player between 2008 and 2012.
Three Hawks recorded double-digit kills as
Barnabas Fenyvesi led the way with 16 terminations followed up by 14 from
Aleksandar Sosa to go along with a team-leading four blocks, as well as 10 kills for
Ljubisa Novakovic, helping Quincy to a .336 hitting percentage as a team, good for just under .150 better than the Royals in the match.
Set One
QU went on the offensive early in the set, doubling up QUC to a 12-6 score, capped off by a
Relja Milosavljevic ace. Shortly after, the Royals threatened to get back into the set, using a four-point run to draw within three at 14-11.
Quincy responded with a two-point run and a pair of three-point runs to claim eight of the next 10 points and build a healthy 22-13 edge late in the set. Moments later, two Fenyvesi kills and a Queens error secured a 25-16 first set win.
Set Two
The Royals opened the second set with a 10-7 advantage, prompting a four-point swing from Quincy to press the Hawks ahead for the first time in the set 11-10.
Queens took six of the next 10 points to build a slim 16-15 lead before using a late four-point run to stretch the advantage to 20-15 heading down the stretch. QU was unable to venture closer than four points the rest of the way as the Royals took the set 25-20.
Set Three
A block and ace for Sosa along with a pair of
Tomas Badan kills and a QUC error gave the Hawks an early 5-1 lead. Queens was able to works its way back within a point at 12-11 before a six-point QU run did most of the work in giving Quincy eight of the next 10 points and a convincing 20-12 edge.
It was relatively smooth sailing from there to the finish as the Royals did make a comeback effort late, but were unable to overcome the early deficit in a 25-20 third set win for the Hawks.
Set Four
In similar fashion to the previous set, it was relatively tightly contested in the first half, finding the score at a 13-13 draw until QU put together the deciding run of the set and match over the next eight points, taking all of them to effectively close out the frame, jumping ahead 21-13.
The Hawks did just that, ending the matter 10 points later on a Novakovic kill to claim a 25-19 set and 3-1 match victory.
