CHARLOTTE, NC. - The Hawks weren't able to get much going in a 3-0 (17-25, 20-25, 23-25) defeat at the hands of the Royals of Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday evening (Feb. 5).
QU was held to a .130 hitting percentage as a squad, with a bright spot in the match coming from
Aleksandar Sosa who did a little bit of everything, leading the team or tying the team-lead in kills, aces, blocks and digs. With the loss, the Hawks move to 6-5 on the season and 1-1 in MIVA play.
Set One
A Sosa kill and
Relja Milosavljevic block gave the first two points of the match to Quincy before Queens runs of two and four points doubled up the score to 6-3. Later in the set with QU trailing 6-9, swings of two and four points put the Royals in firm control ahead 15-7.
The Hawks weren't able to inch any closer than six points for the remainder of the set as QUC went on to claim the opener by a 25-18 score.
Set Two
Queens led for the entirety of the second set although the Hawks did remain within striking distance for the majority of the frame, trailing just 16-17 late in the set until the Royals took five of the next six points to stretch the advantage to five points in the closing stages.
A
Ljubisa Novakovic kill and QUC error brought Quincy back within three at 19-22, but time was too short as Queens claimed the second set 25-20.
Set Three
QU looked poised to stave off the sweep with a 9-4 opening to the third set. The Royals quickly closed the gap to 9-7 with a three-point run before making use of two more three-point swings shortly after to burst out in front 16-14.
Quincy responded with five of the next six points to move back in front 19-17 on kills from
Zackary Zdrojeski, Milosavljevic and Sosa along with a pair of aces for Sosa.
Trailing late at 21-22, kills from
Armaan Dosanjh and
Barnabas Fenyvesi put the Hawks just two points from taking the set until QUC used a three-point run to close out the set 25-23 and match 3-0.
