Hawks Surge to Championship Match, Take 2nd at Prestigious Tier 1 Event

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. - The Quincy University Men's Bowling team closed out the fall semester in impressive fashion this past weekend, turning in one of the best Tier 1 performances in program history at the Collegiate Team Match Games in Fairview Heights, Illinois. The prestigious USBC event, hosted by McKendree University, drew a deep and competitive field, and the Hawks rose to the challenge.

Quincy opened the weekend with a steady day one showing, finishing the opening block in 8th place to put themselves firmly in the mix heading into Sunday. Day two brought even better execution and consistency across the lineup. Behind sharper shotmaking and improved lane play, the Hawks surged up the standings to finish 6th after qualifying, their highest qualifying position ever at a Tier 1 tournament.

Once match play began, Quincy caught fire again, replicating the run they made earlier this fall at the Mid-States Championship in Wichita. The Hawks opened bracket play by sweeping No. 3 seed SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) 2-0, then followed it with a gritty 2-1 victory over No. 2 seed and tournament host McKendree, one of the nation's premier programs, to advance to the championship finals.

In the title match, Quincy battled but ultimately fell 0-3 to No. 5 seed Wichita State, finishing as tournament runner-up. The 2nd-place finish marks the team's second top-two showing in their first three Tier 1 events this season, and it stands as the best finish in program history at the Collegiate Team Match Games on both the qualifying and bracket sides.

Individually, Quincy placed six bowlers inside the top 210 of a field filled with nationally recognized talent. Freshman standout Cayden Thoms led the way, finishing 18th with a five-game total of 1080 (216 average). Nathan Massey followed closely behind in 25th at 1068 (213.6), while Zakery Grosvenor continued his strong semester with a 31st-place finish after totaling 1051 (210.2). Trevor Dodd added a four-game set of 773 (193.25), and Tyler Wojcik posted a three-game block of 565 (188.33). Connor Meegan rounded out the group with a 470 total across three games, averaging 156.66.

Individually, the Hawks were led by three bowlers inside the top 50 of a deep national field. Cayden Thoms (18th, 216 avg), Nathan Massey (25th, 213.6 avg), and Zakery Grosvenor (31st, 210.2 avg) anchored the lineup throughout qualifying, giving Quincy one of the strongest trios in the tournament.

The Hawks now turn their attention to the spring schedule. Quincy will return to competition in January at the highly competitive Kegel–ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic, hosted at the Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois.
