Box Score BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Hawks responded to their first loss of the season two nights ago at Tusculum in the best way possible, sweeping the Tornado of King University (25-20, 25-14, 25-21) on Thursday afternoon (Jan. 23) to move to 3-1 on the year and 2-1 on the road trip.
Barnabas Fenyvesi led the way for Quincy as the Hawks sophomore collected a new career-high 14 kills along with four blocks and a pair of aces.
Set One
QU was on fire to open the match, taking nine of the first 10 points of the set thanks in large part to a seven point run to open the contest.
King responded with runs of four, three and two, grabbing nine of the next 11 points to pull within one at 11-10. Shortly after at 14-11, a three point Tornado swing finally brought KU back to even ground at 14-14.
The Tornado knotted the score again moments later at 15-15 before a three point Hawks run put Quincy ahead for good as King remained in striking distance until QU slammed the door with a four point run to end the set 25-20.
Set Two
The sides split the first 12 points to a 6-6 draw, followed up by another seven point run for Quincy to blow the set wide open at 13-6.
After a pair of Tornado points, the Hawks kept piling on, using two and five point runs to take seven of the next eight points and hold a commanding 20-9 advantage in the frame.
QU went on to seal the set 25-14 shortly after on a Fenyvesi block and KU error.
Set Three
Looking to stave off the sweep, King came out firing in the third set to the tune of a 6-1 advantage. Four points later at 8-3, the Hawks got things cooking with a pair of three point swings to even the tally at 9-9.
Shortly after at 12-10 in favor of the Tornado, Quincy ripped off a five point run on kills from Fenyvesi and
Armaan Dosanjh along with a kill and two aces for
AJ Goedheer to leap in front 15-12.
KU hung within a point until another Hawks run at 17-16, this time for four points, put QU in prime position ahead 21-16 heading down the stretch.
King narrowed the margin back down to three at 23-20 and 24-21 before a
Tomas Badan kill turned the lights out on the Tornado comeback effort, sealing a 25-21 set and 3-0 match victory.
