Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team fell in thriller fashion on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 22) to the University of Illinois Prairie Stars. The Hawks held onto an earned tie with the Prairie Stars for 88 minutes but fell 1-0 in the final minutes of the match.
The Prairie Stars tested
George Roke and the defense early, out-shooting the Hawks 13-3 in the first half. Roke had back-to-back saves early on, a key save 15 minutes into the match, and ended the half with a full-stretched low extension save.
The Hawks' best opportunity came early in the second half on a free kick just a yard outside the penalty box.
Joao Pedro Amaral chipped the ball over the wall and almost snuck it past the Prairie Stars' keeper who batted it away.
Gavin Higgins attempted a shot on the second ball but it was, again, stopped by the Prairie Stars' keeper.
Just like the women's game, the Hawks were booked with a penalty kick against late in the second half. This time, however, the Prairie Stars kicker shot the ball over the net, keeping the score tied. It wasn't until the 88th minute that the Prairie Stars buried the ball past the Hawks and ended the game 1-0.
Roke finished the day with six quality saves.
The Hawks will face Upper Iowa University on the road Sunday, September 29th.
