Women's Volleyball Closes Lee Tournament with Two Wins

CLEVELAND, Tn. - The Hawks wrapped up their trip to Tennessee with a pair of victories on Saturday (Sep. 21) over North Greenville in three sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-21) and Lee in four (25-19, 25-18, 15-25, 25-18) to finish 3-1 on the weekend. 

Match One vs North Greenville

Set One 

NGU took the first five points of the set before a kill from Emma Wijnbergen along with a block and two kills from Erin Matzke pulled the Hawks within one at 5-4. Later in the set trailing 9-7, Quincy used a nine-point run to burst ahead 16-9 and never looked back from there, pressing the advantage to as many as 10 points at 23-13 before going on to take the set 25-16. 

Set Two 

A kill and a block from Matzke put the Hawks ahead to start the second set before North Greenville got back in the mix with a four-point run later in the set to take a 9-7 advantage. QU used a four-point run of their own shortly after to knot the tally at 13-13, battling point-for-point until the 18-18 mark where Quincy closed out the set with seven-straight points for a 25-18 win in the second set. 

Set Three

The Trailblazers took five of the first eight points to lead it by two before four of the next five points went in favor of the Hawks on kills from Wijnbergen, two from Zeynep Cetin and an ace from Luna Van Baars to lead 7-6. Following an NGU point, four more Quincy scores gave QU an 11-7 edge. 

North Greenville narrowed the margin back down to a single point at 16-15, but never got over the hump as the Hawks stayed strong down the stretch to complete the sweep with a 25-21 win in the third and final set.

Match Two vs Lee

Set One 

The Hawks built the first sizable advantage of the set with a three point run at the 8-8 mark on kills from Wijnbergen and Susanna Beretti along with an ace from Elena Kasavica to lead 11-8. Quincy added on to the lead later in the set with a four-point run to take a 19-13 advantage before using a three-point run to close out a 25-19 winner. 

Set Two 

After dropping the first three points of the set, QU took seven of the next 10 points to take a slim 7-6 lead. Following an LU point, the Hawks took seven of the next eight points to press the advantage to 14-8. Lee was unable to recover from there as Quincy furthered the lead to as many as eight points before going on to take the set 25-18. 

Set Three

The Flames built an early 5-2 edge until a three-point Hawks run shortly after evened the score at 8-8. Quincy took a brief 10-9 advantage on a Beretti ace, but it would be an eight-point LU run shortly after that blew the set wide open at 22-13. Lee would go on to claim the third set 25-15. 

Set Four

After a tight start to the fourth set, QU used a four-point run to build the first sizable advantage of the set at 9-5. Later in the frame at 11-8, a five-point Quincy run put the Hawks in fine shape up 16-8. It was smooth sailing from there as a kill from Matzke sealed a 25-18 set, and 3-1 match victory.
