Venvertloh, Vistnes Propel Hawks in Upset Victory

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team secured their first win of the season over #8 Purdue Northwest on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 11). Carter Venvertoh and Paal Vistnes helped the Hawks to victory with second-half goals in the physical match.

There wasn't a dull moment at Jack Mackenzie Field on Thursday afternoon. Both teams battled to be the first to add a goal to the scoreboard. Mathias Bringedal had an opportunity in the first half with a shot just over the crossbar after Stan Cargill picked the ball off Purdue Northwest's left back. Both the Pride and the Hawks found the back of the net in the first half, but both goals were taken back for offsides infractions. A late first-half red card on the Pride gave the Hawks a one-man advantage for the full second half.

Just three minutes into the second half, Carter Venvertloh broke through on a slotted pass from Bringedal and scored the Hawks' first goal of the season. Paal Vistnes headed one into the back of the net just ten minutes later off of a Richard Monge corner kick to put the Hawks up 2-0 with 30 minutes to go.

The Pride didn't let off easy. They peppered 18 shots on the Hawks in the second half and forced goalkeeper George Roke to make some unbelievable saves. Two point blank saves and an upper-90 free kick save kept the Hawks ahead with a very determined Purdue Northwest team. The Pride found the net in the 84th minute on a side-netting shot from the right side.

The Hawks held the Pride off for the final six minutes, securing their first win of the season over a top-10 team. Roke finished with nine saves in the match. The Hawks return this Sunday against #24 Lewis to begin conference play.
