Indianapolis, Ind. - The Quincy University softball team faced the Greyhounds of Indianapolis on Thursday (April 25) due to impending storms hitting the Midwest over the weekend. The Hawks were shut out in game one 3-0 and fell 8-2 in the second game.
Game One
The Hawks kept the best offense in the league to just three runs, two on sacrifice flies and one on a stolen base home. The Hawks had their best chance against arguably the best pitcher in the country in the fourth inning when Allyson Kaiser was hit by a pitch and
Allyson Maynard hit a single that allowed Kaiser to move to third. With two batters in scoring position, the Hawks were hopeful for a run against .23 ERA pitcher, but the Greyhound defense kept them off the scoreboard.
Abbey Hultz got the start for game one, striking out four batters and only allowing four hits from a team that's averaging 8.61 hits a game.
Game Two
Game two went better for the Hawks, having a good chance at notching a run in the third inning with
Mykah Hurley and Shields hitting back-to-back singles. The Hawks moved the runners around but fell victim to two fielder's choices.
The Hawks kept the Greyhounds clean until the bottom of the fourth and responded with
Isabella Shields' first home run of the season in the top of the fifth.
The Hawks went under two runs in the fifth, retiring
Eileen McGinnis for
KJ Weller. Indianapolis got the bulk of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting the Hawks in a tough spot for the final inning of regulation.
Avery Funk started things off for the Hawks with a single up the left side;
Lindsey Fischer came in to run for her and got around on a wild pitch and some fast running on
Mykah Hurley's single to right. The seventh ended with a Shields fly out, the Greyhounds on top 8-2.
