Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's lacrosse sent off their seniors with an electric final game at QU Stadium on Friday evening (April 19). Eight different Hawks scored against the William Jewell Cardinals, beating the red birds 17-3.
Amelia Ham came out hot for the Hawks with the first goal of the evening off a
Patricia Chavira draw control. Chavira had her own goal shortly after off a pass from
Danielle Robinson. Robinson scored back-to-back goals followed by another one from Ham before William Jewell could get on the board. Robinson drew another free position shot in the final seconds of the first to give the Hawks a sizable lead after the quarter.
Emily Leal dished the ball to Chavira at the start of the second, making the score 7-1. Robinson sauced the other three of her six goals of the night in the second quarter, two of three being woman-up goals. Senior
Sarah Conroy scored her first goal of the season, woman-up, and
Felicia Young followed up with another woman-up goal, both assisted by
Patricia Chavira.
With the Hawks up 12-1, they began to get creative with play. Chavira tossed a nasty shot over her right shoulder for a no-looking goal in the middle of quarter three.
Jenna Lang scored her first Quincy goal followed by
Mikenna Ham's first of the season.
The final goals of the game came from
Amelia Ham and
Kara Wilhelm which was fitting for the fifth year as she scored the Hawks first ever goal.
All three goalies got action in Friday night's game. The Hawks' first recruiting commit,
Kelly McClure got to start her final game at The Rock and made one save.
Madison Whiting Wagner got the second quarter with a bit more action, making four saves and picking up three ground balls. Senior
Taylor Young closed out for the Hawks with three saves.
The Hawks celebrated eight seniors, five of which were a part of the inaugural Quincy University women's lacrosse team. These ladies built the program from the bottom up, after a shortened freshman season. After five years of work, the Hawks went from struggling to compete against a tough GLVC schedule to receiving votes for the Top 25 poll and working for a chance at their first conference tournament berth.
Currently, the Hawks sit tied for third place with Missouri Western with the top four teams making the conference tournament. The Hawks face Rockhurst in Kansas City on Sunday.
