Kansas City, Mo. - The Quincy University women's lacrosse team finished their regular season at Rockhurst University Sunday afternoon (April 21). Despite falling to the Rockhurst Hawks 12-11 in the final moments, the Hawks still managed a berth to the GLVC Conference Tournament.
The game started in the hands of the Rockhurst Hawks.
Patricia Chavira drew a foul in scoring position to score the first goal, woman-up and in free position.
It took a while again for the Hawks to get through the Rockhurst defense, but halfway through the second quarter,
Danielle Robinson scored her first of the game, assisted by
Amelia Ham. Robinson had two more goals in the quarter in addition to one each from Ham and Leal to give the Quincy Hawks the lead going into halftime.
Rockhurst came out with energy in the third and took the lead once again.
Emily Leal scored an unassisted goal halfway through the quarter, but Quincy still trailed by one.
For each goal the Rockhurst Hawks scored at the beginning of the final quarter, the Quincy Hawks matched it.
Alaina Wilkinson had the first goal of the fourth, while
Ainslie Reynolds scored back-to-back goals--the second a woman-down goal--to tie the game with seven to go. Rockhurst took the lead again, and Ham got another goal with a minute and a half to go, but the Quincy Hawks were unable to tie it and force the game into overtime.
Despite a heartbreaking loss, the Quincy Hawks slipped into the conference tournament bracket in a head-to-head tie with Lewis and Rockhurst. Their berth came down to their win over Missouri Western State on March 29. Along with the many program firsts the senior class had as the inaugural women's lacrosse team, this will be the Hawks' first time competing for a GLVC championship trophy. The Hawks will face #1 Maryville on Friday at Maryville at noon.
