Hawks Fall in Bird Battle to Cardinals

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team finished their road trip at William Jewell College Sunday afternoon (April 14). The Hawks fell to the Cardinals 4-3 and 7-2.

Game One
Quincy flipped the script in Liberty Sunday afternoon, starting off the game with a run in the second inning, and leading over the Cardinals through three full innings. The Hawks brought Jessie Martin around after her lead-off walk. Freshman Ryann Stoudt doubled down left field, bringing Martin home.

The Hawks added two in the third off errors. Allyson Kaiser was hit by a pitch and came around on a throwing error from Maddy Findley's hit. Martin sent one into the grass in left to bring Findley around for the third run of the game.

The Cardinals found momentum in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run off a double and tied the game in the fourth on a two-run double. A triad of singles gave the Cardinals the win in the fifth inning.

Abbey Hultz pitched all six for the Hawks in game one, striking out six.

Game Two
The Hawks came out with more gusto in the second game by loading up the bases through five batters, but fell victim to fly balls. Eileen McGinnis started in the circle for the Hawks and had a rough go with three runs on four hits.

It took Quincy some time to regroup, waiting until the fifth inning to get a run on the board. Kaiser sent one deep into left field for a double, stole on a wild pitch, and ran in on an Allyson Maynard sac fly. The Cardinals came back with two more runs at the bottom of the inning.

The Hawks added one more to the scoreboard in the sixth after Lindsey Fischer came in for Findley to run and stole home on a wild pitch.

McGinnis pitched through four and a half innings and was retired by KJ Weller who struck out one in just over an inning of work.

The Hawks return home to face McKendree and Missouri-St. Louis next weekend.
