Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team got back in the groove on senior day Saturday (April 20) against the McKendree University Bearcats. Despite dropping the first game of the doubleheader 9-2, the Hawks came out victorious in the second 8-2.
Game One
Both sides of the scoreboard stayed blank until the Quincy half of the second inning when
Avery Funk sent one deep over the wall to put a tally on the board. The Bearcats came back in the third and the sixth with base hits and a home run of their own.Â
The Hawks took advantage of a sleeping Bearcat in the bottom of the sixth inning when
Allyson Maynard sent one into right center that was bobbled by the right fielder and brought
Isabella Shields home for their second run of the game.Â
Senior
Abbey Hultz started the game for the Hawks, pitching six innings and striking out four.
KJ Weller retired her in the final inning to close the game.
Ryleigh Jones had the play of the game, coming from her spot at second to make a diving catch in foul territory in the top of the fourth inning.
Game Two
The Hawks flipped the script for game two, scoring two runs off the bat and keeping it scoreless until the sixth inning. Shields led things off with a single to right, followed by
Allison Kaiser getting on by an error from the second baseman.
Jessie Martin sent a line drive down the line that brought Shields and Kaiser back home.Â
Martin doubled in the fifth, bringing Maynard and Kaiser home and adding to the Hawks' side of the book.
Maddy Findley doubled after Martin, bringing her and
Avery Funk back to the dugout dancing.Â
The Hawks finished with a home run for
Kenzie Moss, the first of her career. Shields got on from another error on the second baseman and was brought home by Maynard's deep single to right field. The Hawks ended the game on a well-executed grounded double-play, from
Mykah Hurley to
Ryleigh Jones and finishing with Maynard.Â
Eileen McGinnis got the start for game two and struck out one batter.Â
The Hawks come back for their last series at Mart Heinen Softball Field on Sunday to face the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons.Â
