Hawks Sweep Day Against Vulcans and Beavers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Winter Haven, Fl. - The Hawks flew south for spring break to catch some sunshine in Florida at The Spring Games this week. Quincy's softball team had a hot start to their trip, beating the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans and the Bemidji State University Beavers. The Hawks overtook the Vulcans 5-3 and toppled the Beavers in extra innings 3-2.Ā 

Game One vs. Vulcans
Abbey Hultz got the start in the circle for the Hawks and retired four batters via strikeout in the first three innings.Ā 

The Hawks offense took some time to adjust to the warm Florida sun before breaking through in the fourth inning with three runs. Back-to-back errors in favor of Allyson Maynard and Kenzie Moss brought the Hawks ample opportunity to add some digits to the scoreboard.Ā 

Maddy Findley sent a sacrifice fly out to left field and wasĀ followed by back-to-back walks, scoring one and loading the bases for the top of the lineup. Isabella Shields hit a single to third base that brought Lindsey Fischer and Moss across home plate.Ā 

The Vulcans stayed dormant for an inning but added two runs off a double in the fifth to stay alive.Ā 

Quincy responded with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning off a third baseman error that brought Allison Kaiser and Fischer home.Ā 

Eileen McGinnis came in to pitch the final two innings for the Hawks and kept the Vulcans to their two runs.Ā 

Game Two vs. Beavers
Despite just five runs total in the game, the Hawks ended their first day in the Sunshine State with a thriller. KJ Weller started the game at pitcher, striking three out in the first two innings.Ā 

The Hawks loaded the bases in the first inning and had an opportunity to go across home, but the Beavers ,chose to take out lead runner Jessie Martin at home.Ā 

The Hawks got on the board at the bottom of the third inning after Findley cracked one over the left-center wall, earning her first home run as a Hawk.Ā 

Quincy's defense kept the Beavers at bay, giving up just one hit and making no errors across four innings of play. The Beavers got their first player across home after two hits and a bunt, tying the game at one at the top of the fifth.Ā 

The Hawks battled to get another runner through, but the score remained tied through the final two innings. The Beavers struck first with an RBI ground out in the first international tie breaker inning, but the Hawks responded with a run of their own off a Mykah Hurley right field single.

Quincy kept Bemidji off the board at the top of the ninth. Greta Specht hit a sacrifice bunt to move Fischer from second to third, putting her in the perfect position to score on Kaiser's single to right field.Ā 

Weller ended with four strikeouts and one earned run in her third win of the season.Ā 

The Hawks went 2-0 on the day and look to continue success on Friday as they play strong opponents in St. Cloud State and Wayne State (Nebraska).Ā
