Hawks Swept to Side by Prairie Stars

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team hosted travel partner University of Illinois Springfield this Saturday (March 30). Quincy dropped both games to the Prairie Stars, the first 3-1 and the second 8-3.

Game One
The Hawks went under early in the first inning, giving up a run on a sac bunt. Kenzie Moss evened the playing ground with a single to right that brought a speedy Mykah Hurley around.

The Prairie Stars sent another runner around the bases in the fourth inning and sealed the deal in the seventh inning on a one-run double from their pinch hitter. The Hawks were limited in opportunities to bring their own runners around with only three hits and one walk after the second inning.

Abbey Hultz was the solo pitcher for the first game of the doubleheader, striking out four batters.

Game Two
The start of the second game did not fare for the Hawks either. The lead-off batter for the Prairie Stars hit a home run, but the Hawks kept locked in with three infield plays to end the first half of the first.

The other side of the first inning saw two runs from the Hawks, starting off with a single from Isabella Shields and a single to center from Allyson Maynard that brought Shields home. Moss reached on a fielder's choice, Jessie Martin walked, and the bases were loaded for Allison Kaiser to put on in play for the second run of the inning.

The Prairie Stars tied things up in the second and had some active bats through the fourth inning, where they put the Hawks under three runs. Starting pitcher Eileen McGinnis saw lots of action this first half of the game with three line drive rockets coming back to her. She made a stellar play on one in the top of the third to give the Prairie Stars their first out. McGinnis was retired by KJ Weller after the fourth.

The Hawks scored one final run in the sixth inning off singles from Martin, Kaiser and Shields, Martin touching home plate.

The Hawks come back to Mart Heinen Softball Field next weekend with games against Drury University and Southwest Baptist.
