QUINCY, Ill. - In their penultimate home match of the season the Hawks played host to a nonconference foe in the Saints of Maryville. Quincy got a strong showing from
Raje Alleyne who delivered 20 kills but it wasn't enough to overcome the Saints as MU took the match three sets to one (19-25, 22-25, 25-15, 23-25).
Set One
Maryville jumped out to an early advantage leading by a score of 7-3 before taking seven of the next 11 to double up Quincy 14-7. The Hawks responded taking seven of the next nine, including a five-point run that featured a kill from Alleyne, back-to-back aces from
Zackary Zdrojeski and a couple of errors to narrow the deficit to 16-14.
MU answered with seven of the next nine points to move ahead 23-16 and went on to claim the set 25-19.
Set Two
QU used a pair of kills from both
AJ Goedheer and Alleyne along with a block for
Logan Gieseke and Alleyne supplemented by Saints errors to build a 6-4 advantage. Both sides traded points until a three-point run for Maryville gave it a 13-11 edge.
MU remained at the forefront as the Hawks nipped at their heels until a three-point QU run at the 21-18 mark on a pair of errors and a kill fro Goedheer evened the tally at 21-21. The Saints mixed service aces and errors from the opposition to close out a 25-22 win in the second.
Set Three
Needing a spark to stave off the sweep, Quincy got one in a big way to kick off the third, opening with an 8-1 lead. During the stretch, Alleyne collected four kills along with one from Zdrojeski to fuel the run.
The Hawks maintained a comfortable advantage for the remainder of the set, never letting the Saints any closer than six points and building the advantage to as many as 10 on a service ace from
Ryne Jacobsen that also happened to be the set clincher in a 25-15 victory.
Set Four
MU turned up the heat to start the fourth building a 10-5 lead. QU got right back into it taking five of the next seven on kills from
Keegan Carey, Alleyne and Gieseke to trail 12-10. Maryville rebuilt the advantage to five at 16-11 before a six-point Hawks run boosted Quincy to a 17-16 lead.
The Saints took five of the next six to lead it 21-18 heading down the stretch and even pressed the advantage to 24-20 shortly after to force match point. QU used a pair of errors and a kill for Gieseke on a feed from
Dylan Feely as part of a three-point run to narrow the margin to 24-23, but conceded the final point to give Maryville a 25-23 winner in the final set.
