Hawks Drop Conference Opener to RU

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's lacrosse team kick off its conference portion of the season with a hosting of the Hawks of Rockhurst at The Rock on Thursday (Mar. 21). The Hawks put up crooked numbers in every period of the match, but were unable to avoid a 16-8 double-up to fall to 0-1 in conference play.

QU opened the scoring at the 11:31 mark of the first, getting a goal from Jordan Ernst on a feed from Mason Marano to lead it until about six minutes later when RU found the back of the net to even the tally just after the six minute mark. Moments later, Rockhurst took the lead with a second score before a man-up goal from Jayme Brain knotted things back up at 2-2. The Rockhurst Hawks closed out the period with a goal in the final half minute to lead at the first break.

RU found the back of the net first in the second period before a three minute stall ended with a goal from the reigning GLVC Player of the Week in Christian Czarny to get his side back within one. Rockhurst added another goal to press the advantage back to two, but the Hawks were equal to the task once more, getting a goal from Caidyn Prediger to make it 5-4. RU took the final two goals of the half and a 7-4 lead into the locker room.

Rockhurst got on the board in the third with three-straight goals to press the advantage to 10-5 for the boys in blue. Quincy got two of them back, closing out the period on a 2-0 scoring run with a goal from Nick Woodworth, assisted by Eli Cowan, and a man-up goal for Brain on another Marano feed to trail 10-6 with 15 to play.

The fourth period was not a kind one to the Hawks as those pesky Hawks from the other side of the Mississippi really got it going late with six goals to put the match away. Quincy had a couple of bright spots in the waning seconds of the contest, getting a pair of goals in the final minute on scores from Eli Cowan and another for Jordan Ernst. Hawks keeper, Ryan Riggs, collected 17 saves in the match.

Next Up

The Hawks remain at home for their next match, facing off against the Flyers of Lewis for a 1:00 PM GLVC conference showdown at QU Stadium on Saturday (Mar. 30).
