Hawks Drop Contest to Panthers

Evansville, Ind. – The Quincy University softball team dropped their second game of the Blue Bridge Battle tournament against Ohio Dominican University. The Panthers scored seven unanswered runs, beating the Hawks 7-0.

The Hawks held their own in the first innings of their second game of the day, only allowing one run from the Panthers in the first three innings. Starting pitcher Abbey Hultz had two strikeouts during this time, and relied on a solid defense for the first half of the game. On the offense, the Hawks did better with bat-to-ball connection but fell victim to some great defense from the Panthers.

The Hawks fell off in the fourth inning, giving three runs to Ohio Dominican. The Panthers got on base and a sac-bunt put both runners in scoring position. Quincy broke up the Panthers' scoring party when a fielder's choice to Jessie Martin ended with a force-out at home. With the bases still loaded, the Panthers brought two more runs in before Hultz could strike out the final batter.

Eileen McGinnis retired Hultz in the fifth inning and had a rough start to her relief. Through just six batters, the Hawks gave up three more runs. The bottom of the fifth didn't fare to well for the offense of the Hawks with all three batters striking out. The Hawks defense locked in for the final two innings and kept the Panthers from adding any more to the scoreboard.

The Hawks return tomorrow for two more games in the Blue Bridge Battle. The first will be against Cedarville and the Hawks will visit with the Walsh Cavaliers in their final game of the tournament.
