Box Score Evansville, Ind. – The Quincy University softball program started Day 2 of the Blue Bridge Battle off on a high note with a win over the Cedarville Yellowjackets. Ten hits propelled the Hawks past the Yellowjackets 7-6.
The Hawks were off to a rocky start Saturday morning, loading up the bases for the Yellowjackets and giving up six runs. Starting pitcher
KJ Weller had two strikeouts in the inning, but Cedarville's offense was too strong for the sophomore.
Eileen McGinnis retired Weller in the second, striking out the first batter and forcing the other two into easy infield outs. The Hawks took a minute to regroup in the game, but finally circled the bases in the fourth inning.
Avery Funk started things off for the Hawks with a single up the left side.
Mykah Hurley drew a walk, but it was
Ryleigh Jones who put the Hawks on the scoreboard with a right field single that sent pinch runner Aileen Walker home.
Quincy pressed on until the sixth inning when they scored six runs on just three hits. Funk's single to right brought
Greta Specht home. She pushed forward to second on a throwing error from the right fielder, putting her and
Kenzie Moss in scoring position. Two walks and a sacrificed fly ball from
Lindsey Fischer brought the Hawks within one run of the Yellowjackets.
Under pressure, the Yellowjackets' Russel threw a wild pitch, sending Jones across home plate.
Jessie Martin finished the scoring run for the Hawks with a single just behind shortstop, giving the Hawks the lead with one and a half innings remaining.
Martin came back in the bottom of the inning with a double play to second and first to keep the Yellowjackets at bay. Despite two hits in the seventh inning for the Hawks, the score stayed 7-6 in favor of the Hawks.
The Hawks will finish out the Blue Bridge Battle against Walsh University at noon.
