Nashville, Tenn. - The Quincy University softball team finished their weekend in Nashville with a non-conference doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene University on Monday (Feb. 19). Strong defense from the Trojans kept the Hawks off the board, losing 8-0 in both contests.
Game One:
The Hawks did not have a hot start on Monday afternoon, and gave up six runs in the first inning. A string of singles and a walk helped pave the way for a Trojan double that brought three players across home plate. Starting pitcher
Abbey Hultz knocked out two batters in response, but an error in the outfield helped the Trojans bring two more runners in. Trevecca Nazarene finished the first inning with one more run before an outfield fly ball retired the inning.
The Hawks worked to get a run on the board, but great defense from the Trojans limited their opportunities. The Hawks picked up their defense after a tough first inning and kept the Trojans at bay until the fourth inning when the Trojans sent two-run homer beyond the fence. The Hawks couldn't get around the bases in the fifth inning, and the game ended in the fifth due to the run rule.
Hultz sent two batters back to the dugout and was credited with the loss.
Eileen McGinnis retired Hultz in the fourth inning.
Game 2
After some time to regroup, the Hawks started the second game on a better note. Trevecca Nazerene scored two in the first, one off a single up the right and another due to a double-steal play. The Hawks were not keen on offense this game and only recorded one hit from
Maddy Findley and one walk from
Allyson Maynard. Quincy gave up three more runs in the fifth inning, finishing the game there 8-0.
The Hawks look for a better go this weekend at the Blue Bridge Invitational in Evansville, Indiana. The Hawks will face more GMAC competition with the likes of Tiffin, Ohio Dominican, Cedarville, and Walsh.
