Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University football team bounced back after Week One's last-second loss to beat Madonna University 89-0 on Saturday (Sept. 9). After this weekend's game, the Quincy offense ranks first in the GLVC and in the nation for points per game.
First Quarter
The first quarter started hot for the Hawks with five touchdowns.
Jalen Lawrence's kickoff return of 47 yards gave the Hawks a great start to their first drive, which ended with a
Jadon Washington 3-yard run to the end zone. Madonna's opportunity to even the score was soured by Anthony Gilpin, Jr., for a 60-yard return off a punt attempt.
Madonna's next drive was interrupted by
Joel Graves who intercepted a short pass to put the Hawks back at offense. Quarterback
Drake Davis found
Hans Wisnewski deep in the end zone, putting the Hawks up 21-0 just five minutes into the game.
Joe Webb wanted to follow in Graves's footsteps and intercepted another Madonna pass and returned the ball 13 yards, putting Quincy just 40 yards from their end zone. Another deep Davis pass, this time to Lawrence, resulted in a Hawks touchdown.
The next Quincy drive put Madonna at victim of two penalties and guided the Hawks from their defensive 23-yard line to a touchdown in seven plays.
JQ Brown got the credit for this touchdown as his three rushes up the middle in the last 6 yards gave the Quincy its last touchdown of the quarter.
Second Quarter
The Hawks didn't take long before scoring their sixth touchdown of the game as it came just one play after the break. The Hawks defense was stellar at keeping Madonna at bay, forcing the Crusaders to a punt on their next drive.
JQ Brown rushed for a total of 84 yards on the next QU drive, for another touchdown. Quincy attempted a 2-point conversion on this play, but were unsuccessful on the rush.
Quincy forced Madonna into another punt formation on the next drive. Quincy exchanged their quarterback to
Ike Wiley.
Teon Dollard rushed for 54 yards on the next drive to set up the Hawks for another scoring opportunity. A deep pass from Wiley to
Aniik Mckenzie converted to the eighth touchdown for the Hawks.
A short pass from Wiley and a total rush of 43 yards for
Teon Dollard led to the next Quincy touchdown. Quincy forced a punt out of the next Madonna drive where Gilpin Jr. returned for 31 yards. In just two plays, the Hawks made the end zone their home again.
Third Quarter
Quincy again chose to defend the North end zone for the second half in attempts to keep the scoring going in the South end zone.
Kamrin Cox was credited for the next touchdown for two rushes in the drive, including a 1-yard push into the end zone.
Madonna found some faith the rest of the quarter, halting the Quincy offense.
Fourth Quarter
