MARION, Ill. – A day after a thrilling walk-off victory over Missouri S&T in the first round of the GLVC Tournament, the Quincy University Baseball team took to the field again to faceoff with the Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis. A three-run homer from
Dustin Dupont and two RBI singles from
Brock Boynton along with steady pitching down the stretch, lead the Hawks to a 7-5 victory in the second round of the GLVC Championship Tournament.
The game began as a duel of starting pitching with neither side being able to scratch across a run in the first three innings. QU starter,
Griffin Kirn, collected three strikeouts over his scoreless first three frames of work.
Austin Simpson got the Hawks scoring effort going in the fourth inning, slapping a leadoff single through the left side of the infield. A walk from
Zach Parks in the next at-bat, followed by a sacrifice bunt, moved the runners into scoring position. Two batters later,
Brock Boynton legged out a two-out, RBI single on the infield to score Simpson for the first run of the contest.
Dustin Dupont lifted a homer over the left field fence in the next AB to plate three more and make it 4-0 after the top half of the fourth.
Kirn struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth, bringing his strikeout total to six on the day in four innings.
Anxious to add on to the advantage,
Lance Logsdon ripped a double to left center field to lead off the fifth inning.
Nolan Wosman followed up with a triple into the left center gap as well, scoring Logsdon. A wild pitch in the next AB would score Wosman to push the lead further to 6-0.
The Greyhounds responded with a four spot in the bottom half of the fifth. Three singles, three walks and a double put UINDY right back in the game at 6-4.
Roman Harrison worked a clean inning of relief in the sixth after coming on in relief in the bottom of the fifth.
QU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh frame, coming away with a run to show for it. A double from Simpson along with a single from Parks and a walk from
Ben Dahlof juiced the bases for another RBI infield single from Boynton to replenish the lead to three at 7-4.
Indianapolis got to Harrison for a run in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly plated the Greyhounds fifth run of the contest.
Eli Ecton worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth with two strikeouts after coming on in relief of Harrison in the seventh. Ecton collected the first out of the ninth before surrendering two walks and getting pulled.
Nolan Roseman came on next in a specialty situation. The lefty retired the lone hitter he faced on a fielder's choice to second.
Cruz Meier came in for his second game of work in as many days, retiring the final hitter on a grounder to third to preserve the 7-5.
Quincy now awaits the winner of the 9:00 a.m. elimination game tomorrow between Maryville and William Jewell. The Hawks could advance to the championship game with a win in tomorrow's 4:00 p.m. contest.
