MARION, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team faced off against the three-seeded Saints of Maryville University on Saturday (May 14) in the third-round action of the GLVC Championship Tournament. The Hawks out-slugged MU using 14 hits to score 12 times in the 12-8 victory.
Quincy got in the scoring column to lead off the contest in the top half of the first. Singles from
Gino D'Alessio and
Luke Napleton followed by a wild pitch made it 1-0 after the first half-inning of the game.
Maryville put up three runs in their half of the first frame. Two walks and a big fly to left center gave them the lead 3-1.
After a quiet second inning from both sides, QU exploded for six runs in the third inning. The first five batters reached base safely highlighted by an RBI single from
Dustin Dupont as well as a bases clearing RBI triple from
Lance Logsdon to roar back in front 5-3.
Austin Simpson added another run later in the inning on a groundball to the right side and
Connor Simons drove in the final run on a single through the rights side to make it 7-3.
The Saints put up a run in the bottom half of the third on a solo homerun to pull back within three at 7-4.
The Hawks replenished their lead to four in the next half inning. Singles from D'Alessio and Dupont along with a wild pitch and a grounder pushed the lead back to four.
Maryville plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. A walk sandwiched by two errors and an RBI fielder's choice cut the advantage in half, pulling MU within two at 8-6.
Two walks, a fielder's choice and a single from
Brock Boynton plated a run for the Hawks in their third consecutive inning. Walks from Simpson and
Joe Huffman followed by a fielder's choice and the single from Boynton made it 9-5 after the top of the fifth.
MU continued to remain responsive of QU scoring with more of their own in the fifth. A walk and a double put two on for a two-run single to close the gap to one 9-8 through five.
Dupont led off the sixth turn at the plate for the Hawks with a triple to left field.
Luke Napleton lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Quincy's 10
th run of the contest.
After coming on in the bottom of the fifth to diffuse a tough situation, lefty
Tyler Carpenter turned in a sensational performance. The graduate student held the Saints off the scoreboard for all four of his innings of work, bridging a much-needed gap while allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts.
Quincy loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, adding two more runs on walk from
Adam Lewis and a sac fly from Boynton to round out the scoring and propel the Hawks to at 12-8 victory.
The win, QU's 43
rd on the season, not only punches a ticket to the championship game of the GLVC Tournament, but also ties the single-season team wins record in the program's history.
The Hawks now await the outcome of the game or games to be played between UINDY and Drury on the other side of the bracket. Tomorrow's championship game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. unless another game is necessary to decide a winner between Drury and UINDY, in which case the championship will take place at 4:00 p.m.
