Hawks Set New Program Wins Record in GLVC Championship Victory

MARION, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team defeated Drury University 13-6 in the championship game of the GLVC Championship Tournament for a clean sweep through the conference tournament, fifth championship title for the program, and new program record for wins in a single season, now set at 44. Jay Hammel delivered six innings of two-run ball while Lance Logsdon and Austin Simpson drove in nine to pace the offense in the championship winning effort.

The Hawks took advantage of a nightmare start for DU. Two Walks, three wild pitches and two HBPs, the last a RBI for Wosman, plated a run with the bases loaded. Simpson smacked a ball back up the middle for a two RBI single to push the lead to 3-0 after the opening half inning.

Both lineups failed to enter the scoring column again until the fourth inning. During that stretch, QU starter, Jay Hammel, cruised through the first trip through the lineup. The right-hander retired the side in order in the first and third and faced only four batters in the second while surrendering no hits.

Quincy blew the game wide open in the top half of the fourth inning, scoring six runs on five hits. Ben Dahlof and Brock Boynton singled, followed by an RBI fielder's choice from Gino D'Alessio. Napleton walked to load the bases for Logsdon to clear them with a three RBI double to make it 7-0. A walk from Nolan Wosman followed by a single from Simpson drove in another run. After a pitching change, Joe Huffman joined the party with a single up the middle to make it 9-0 after the Hawks fourth at-bat.

Hammel surrendered a one-out double for his first hit allowed of the contest, but he retired the next two hitters to conclude the fourth. It wasn't until the sixth inning that the Panthers brought through. Two doubles, a single and a sac fly scored Drury's first runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth.

A longball off the bat of Simpson supplied the Hawks answer in the top of the sixth. Logsdon led off with a walk and Simpson delivered the drive two hitters later to replenish the lead to nine at 11-2.

QU added a run in each of the next two innings to further the lead to double digits. An RBI single from Lance Logsdon in the top of the seventh and a sacrifice fly for Gino D'Alessio in the eighth frame put the Hawks in a comfortable 13-2 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth.

The Panthers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to attempt a comeback effort, but the deficit was too large and time too short. Chase Gockel recorded the final out of the title winning 13-6 victory.

Now, Quincy looks forward to the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament next week. With an appearance guaranteed through winning the conference championship and a host role almost a certainty given the club's resume, the Hawks await the announcement of their opponents for the continued, upcoming postseason fray.
