Baseball Sweeps Weekend Series with Northwood

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team closed out their home opening weekend series with another doubleheader against Northwood University on Sunday (Mar.5). The Hawks collected two more wins and a 4-0 series sweep of the Timberwolves taking game one, a seven-inning game, 10-8 and the second contest 8-7.

This is the program's first sweep since they swept William Jewell College in a four-game set on April 16th through the 18th of 2021.

Game One

QU starter Kobe Essien struck out the side in the top of the first, paving the way for the Hawks lineup to do some damage in the bottom of the inning, and damage they did. Quincy sent 12 hitters to the plate in the inning, collecting seven hits and cashing in seven runs to blow the game wide open.

Gino D'Alessio led off with a double to left center followed by an RBI single for Brock Boynton. Lance Logsdon doubled to the right center gap to make put runners at second and third. Nolan Wosman drove in a run on a single along with another RBI single from Austin Simpson to make it 3-0. After a walk, Logan Voth drove in another run on a sac fly to put the Hawks up 4-0. Dustin Dupont scratched another run across on an RBI single to make it 5-0 with two men on. Up for a second time in the frame, D'Alessio collected another hit and a couple of RBIs to make it 7-0 after one.

NU answered in the top of the second, plating four runs of their own on two singles, a walk and a homerun to cut the deficit to three at 7-4. The Timberwolves grabbed another run in the top of the third to make it 7-5.

Freshman Joe Huffman tallied another for the Hawks in the bottom of the third, depositing a long ball over the left field wall to push the lead back to three at 8-5. Quincy worked their way into the scoring column once again in the bottom of the fourth. Another single from D'Alessio along with a stolen base allowed Logsdon to drive him in on an RBI single. A double from Simpson brought in Logsdon after he advanced to second on a single from Wosman to make it 10-5 after four innings.

Northwood put together a comeback bid in the bottom of the last, loading the bases prompting coach Schissel to call on lefty Nolan Roseman out of the pen. With a padded lead, the Hawk veteran maneuvered his way through the final two outs to collect the save and preserve a 10-8 win.

Game 2

Looking to complete the sweep, QU jumped out to an early lead once again in game two. The Hawks went up 1-0 in the first on an RBI single from Lance Logsdon, scoring Gino D'Alessio who was hit-by-pitch. Quincy tacked on another in the second inning on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

The Timberwolves broke through in the third inning in a big way. A grand slam to left center field put Northwood up 4-2 midway through the third. NU added another in the fourth on a fielders choice pushing the lead to 5-2.

The Hawks responded with three runs of their own to tie the game in the fourth. A double from Austin Simpson along with a walk from Zach Parks set the stage for a game tying D'Alessio three run homer to make it 5-5.

Northwood University plated another run in the sixth on an infield single to move ahead 6-5 heading into the late innings.

After being held scoreless in the sixth, Luke Napleton singled to start a rally in the seventh. A single from Logsdon followed by another single from Wosman to right field plated Napleton. An error from the right fielder sent Logsdon home as well but he was gunned down by a great throw, leaving Wosman at second after advancing on the throw home. Austin Simpson homered to the opposite field in left to put Quincy back on top 8-6.

Roman Harrison worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, part of his three inning relief stint, to leave the Hawk three outs away from getting out the brooms.

Brett Panick was called upon in the ninth to close out the game. The lefty flamethrower surrendered a run, but worked his way out of the high leverage situation ending the game on a strikeout to give the Hawks an 8-7 win and a 4-0 sweep of the series over their regional foes.

The Hawks are back in action next weekend, playing host to Augustana University for a three game set. The teams are scheduled for a doubleheader on Friday (March 10th) and a single game on Saturday (March 11th). This will be the first time in program history that the Vikings come to the Gem City.
