COLUMBUS, Oh. – The Hawks continued their MIVA conference schedule on the road taking on Ohio State University for a 3:00 p.m. match. The Buckeyes defeated QU in three sets (25-10, 25-11, 25-19) at the Covelli Center on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 25).
Set One
Quincy fell behind early in the first surrendering the first two points to OSU. Still up two at 6-4, Ohio State pressed their lead to five, taking the next three points to make it 9-4. The Hawks got a couple back on errors from their opponents, but a four point run from the Buckeyes furthered the lead to 13-6.
A kill from
AJ Goedheer put Quincy in double figures at 19-10, but OSU closed the book on the first set, firing off six straight kills to close out the frame 25-10.
Set Two
The Hawks kept things interesting to open the second set. After dropping the first three points, a kill from
Roman Deryckere along with a service error for Ohio State drew QU within one at 3-2. Shortly after, another kill from Deryckere along with a kill from
Raje Alleyne kept Quincy within one at 6-5.
The Buckeyes responded with a nine point run to blow the set wide open and take a commanding 10 point advantage 15-5. Kills from Deryckere, Goedheer and
Jonas Holzinger rounded out the offensive effort for the Hawks in a second set loss 25-11.
Set Three
Looking to stave off a sweep, Quincy took advantage of some errors by the Buckeyes to hang around in the early stages. A kill from Alleyne along with four OSU errors found the set tied at 5-5. Kills from Deryckere and Goedheer paired with another error gave the Hawks their first lead of the contest at 8-7.
Alleyne collected three more kills along with three service errors from the opposition to draw the score once again, this time at 15-15. Ohio State responded in a big way, finding another gear, and rattling off a six-point run to spell the end for QU. The Hawks battled down to the end, but ultimately couldn't overcome the deficit, falling in the final set 25-19.
Quincy will be back in action next Thursday (Mar. 30) for another MIVA conference showdown against the Mastodons of Purdue Fort Wayne University. Game time in Fort Wayne is set for 6:00 p.m.
