MUNCIE, In.- The Quincy Men's Volleyball team was on the road on Friday (March 24) for a MIVA match up against Ball State University. The Hawks would lose the game (3-1).
1st Set
Ball State would get off to a quick start in the first set, getting five straight points to start the game. A kill by Raje Alleyne would get the Hawks on the board. Roman Deryckere and AJ Goedheer would each get kills to cut the Hawks deficit to five. Despite Raje Alleyne's 6 kills in the first set QU would lose the set 25-13.
2nd Set
The Hawks would win the first point of the second set on a kill by Roman Deryckere and take an early 1-0 lead. After going back and forth for the next couple points, Keegan Carey would get back to back kills and give the hawks an 8-6 lead and QU would not look back. Ball State would cut the QU lead to 1 point several times but would never catch up and Quincy would win the second set 25-20.
The Hawks would have their best hitting percentage of the game hitting 0.455% in the set. Raje Alleyne would have 6 kills in the set and Keegan Carey would add 5 kills of his own in the set.
3rd Set
After being down 3-2 early in the third set Raje Alleyne would have back to back kills and give QU their first lead of the third set. After Ball State tied it up, a kill by AJ Goedheer would give the Hawks the lead once again. After being up 8-5 Ball State would go on a three point run and tie the game up at 8-8. Kills by Raje Alleyne and Roman Deryckere would give QU the lead once again at 10-9.
The game would go back and forth as neither team could build a lead, but after a Ball State run that would give them a 14-12 lead QU would go on a three point run of their own thanks to a kill by Raje Alleyne and errors from Ball State. The Cardinals would get 6 unanswered points to take a 23-17 lead and would end up winning the set 25-19.
4th Set
The Hawks would not go down easy in the fourth set. After Ball State went on a four point run to take an early 6-2, lead Quincy would respond right back with a four point run of their own with kills by AJ Goedheer and Keegan Carey as well as an ace from Raje Alleyne to tie the game right back at 6-6. After going back and forth the next couple points a Logan Gieseke kill would give the Hawks a 9-8 lead.
Both teams would put up a fight as the set would be close all the way to the end but the Cardinals would go on a three point run towards the end, the Hawks would try to tie it back up cutting the deficit to two points but Ball State would win the final set 25-21.
Quincy University will have a quick turn around as they will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday (March 25). The Hawks will be in Columbus, Ohio as they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Game is set to start at 3:00 pm.
