QUINCY, Ill. – The Hawks opened up Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Sunday, March 19th hosting the Missouri S&T Miners. QU would take both games by the scores of 3-2 and 6-2.
Game 1
After a scoreless top of the first, the Hawks got the offense rolling in the bottom half of the inning as Taylor Downen doubled to left center which brought home Mykah Hurley. Jayle Jennings helped her own cause with a fly ball to left field that was misplayed by the Miners, letting Downen come around to score.
The Miners cut the lead to 2-1 with a solo home run to center field in the top of the 3rd.
The next inning Downen singled up the middle bringing Allison Kaiser in to score that gave QU their 2-run lead back. S&T got to within a run in the 6th that forced a QU pitching change. Brooklyn Fischer threw 4 pitches to result in two fly outs to right field.
Fischer finished off the game with a 4 strikeout inning. She got the first Miner to swing and miss, but reached base safely and on a wild throw by Downen. The southpaw hurler got the next three batters to swing and miss.

Game 2
The Hawks got on the board first in the nightcap of the doubleheader as well in the bottom of the 2nd. Allison Kaiser singled through the left side with the bases loaded to bring home Jayle Jennings. Courtney Mills made it 2-0 QU on an RBI single to right field.
After S&T made it 2-1 in the top of the 4th, the Hawks added three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kaiser singled through the left side that scored Bailey Mitchell. Casey Brennan laid down a bunt and reached on a throwing error from the pitcher which scored Lindsey Fischer. The Hawks took advantage of a wild pitch which scored Kaiser to make it 5-1.
Mitchell made it 6-2 in the 6th with an RBI single up the middle.
