Sims Collects Top 12 Finish at National Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. – The Division II National Championships opened in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday, March 10th. In the first year of the program, men's wrestling made history by having a Hawk wrestler qualify in the 149 pound bracket.

"It was a heck of a tournament for Phillip Sims," said head coach Jimmy Eggemeyer. "It was a tough loss losing in the All-American round, but he wrestled with grit and heart all tournament. Phil represented QU wrestling at its finest. This lays the foundation for our program moving forward."

Phillip Sims opened his championship appearance against the fifth seeded Jason Hanenberg, Western Colorado. Sims would get pinned in two minutes and twenty-two seconds. He moved on to the Preliminaries against Austin Fietz of Lake Erie. The Aurora, Illinois native defeated Fietz by Major Decision (11-3).

Sims would go on to win his 2nd match of the day by a 5-2 decision over John Burger of Nebraska – Kearney. The Hawk wrestler would see the 3rd seeded Nick Young of Gannon in the 2nd Round of the Consolation bracket. Young would get the Major Decision (10-0) over Sims.
