TOWN AND COUNTRY, Mo.- The Quincy University Men's Volleyball team concluded its two-game road trip at Maryville University for a Friday night (Mar. 10) 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest against the Saints. The Hawks defeated Maryville in four sets, (26-28, 25-19, 25-23, 25-18) to return home 2-0 on their short road trip.
Set One
Maryville jumped out to an 11-7 lead to start of the first set. QU came back shortly after with a four-point run on an ace from
Raje Alleyne and a kill from
Roman Deryckere as well as two errors to pull back ahead 14-13.
The Hawks continued to press ahead later in the set, going up 21-18 on a kill from
Logan Gieseke, an ace from
Eddie Jakubauskas and an error. MU took four of the next five points to draw the score at 22-22.
Quincy forced match point, taking the next two on an error and a kill from Alleyne to make it 24-22. The Saints staved off the set loss, taking the next two points to draw it once again at 24-24. The Hawks lead 25-24 and 26-25, but ultimately dropped the first set, losing the final three points in a 26-28 loss.
Set Two
QU took advantage of four-straight errors from MU to pull ahead 6-4. Two more errors and a kill from
Keegan Carey pushed the lead to 9-5.
At 14-11, the Hawks continued to press on, taking five of six points on two kills from Alleyne, another from Jakubauskas as well as two more errors to make it 21-13. Maryville put together a late comeback bid, but it was stamped out in a 25-19 set two victory.
Set Three
The Hawks lead early, pulling ahead 8-4 on a couple of errors and a kill from
Dominik Wagiel. QU maintained a safe lead until the Saints came within two at 15-13.
Maryville narrowed the lead to one on multiple occasions down the stretch, including at match point 24-23, but ultimately couldn't come back in the set. Jakubauskas fired home the winner, on a feed from
Jonas Holzinger, giving Quincy a 25-23 victory.
Set Four
QU lead early once again, pulling ahead 6-4 on three errors and kills from Alleyne along with another kill from
Logan Gieseke. The Hawks doubled their lead to four at 13-9 later in the set on three straight Saints errors.
Quincy kept their opponents at a safe distance until they went on a big run, blowing the set open and putting a comeback out of reach for MU. At 18-15, QU took five points in a row on three-straight aces from Jakubauskas bookended by kills from Alleyne and Gieseke to make it 23-15.
The Hawks coasted home on two more Maryville errors to close out the set 25-18 and take the match 3-1.
A week-long break is in-store for QU, resuming MIVA play next Saturday (Mar. 18) in St. Charles against Lindenwood University. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
