QUINCY, Ill. – Fresh off a high scoring victory over Lake Erie College to open their season, the Hawks played host to the Rockhurst University Hawks on Tuesday (Feb. 14) for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference matchup to start their home schedule.
In stark contrast to the first match of the season, only 11 total goals were scored in a very tight, back and forth affair. RU scored the equalizer with just over a minute remaining, and the game winner just under a minute into overtime to defeat Quincy 6-5.
The Hawks, of Quincy that is, scored the first two goals of the game. The first, and only goal of the first period came from
Jordan Ernst off a feed from
Jayme Brain. QU added another from
Christian Czarny, assisted by
Mason Marano at the 12:12 mark of the second quarter to take a 2-0 advantage.
Rockhurst found the back of the net twice at the 6:04 and 1:20 marks in the second frame to tie the game 2-2 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Quincy got in the scoring column first in the second half, taking advantage of a cross-check penalty on RU. Up a man,
Ty Gillitzer found
Donald Griffith for the goal to put the Hawks back up a score 3-2 with a little over 11 minutes left in the third.
The Hawks of Rockhurst rounded out the scoring in the third finding the back of the net on two occasions in the last six minutes to move back in front 4-3 heading into the final 15 minutes of the contest.
Early in the fourth, Quincy once again took advantage of a man up situation to knot the score. The connection of
Blaine Lowrance to Ernst for the goal, his second of the game, made it 4-4. Six minutes later,
Jayme Brain put the Hawks up a score 5-4 at the 7:07 mark on another dish from Marano.
The QU defensive unit kept Rockhurst at bay down the stretch, but ultimately couldn't hold on to their slim lead, surrendering the equalizing goal with 1:08 remaining. Neither team managed a goal in the final minute sending the contest to overtime.
The Hawks won the faceoff to start overtime but couldn't convert on the opportunity. Rockhurst scored the game winner at the 3:03 mark to take home the 6-5 road win.
Quincy will be taking the country roads to West Virginia this weekend for a 3:00 p.m. showdown on Friday (Feb. 17) at Wheeling University. The Hawks then travel to Canton, Ohio for a Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon contest at Malone University at 1:00 p.m.
