QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University Men's volleyball team played host to the Mastodons of Purdue University Fort Wayne for a MIVA conference showdown on Saturday (Feb. 11) in Pepsi arena. The 7:00 p.m. contest went to PFW in three sets (15-25, 17-25, 18-25).
Set 1
The set started off close early on tied 2-2, but a seven point run by the Mastodons busted the set open at 9-2. The Hawks pieced together a few runs drawing within five at 15-10, but ultimately weren't able to overcome the early deficit in a 25-15 first set win for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Set 2
QU took the first two points of the set on a kill from
Raje Alleyne and an ace from
Eddie Jakubauskas. Later in the set down one the Hawks took advantage of two errors by PFW to grab a 9-8 lead. After losing the lead, the Mastodons put together a couple of runs taking seven of the next eight points opening a 15-10 advantage.
Quincy kept things interesting past the midway point of the set narrowing the deficit to three at 16-13 on another kill from Jakubauskas, but the Hawks couldn't put it all together down the stretch dropping the set 25-17.
Set 3
Looking to stave off a sweep, QU battled early in the set. Tied at 3-3, PFW took three-straight to make it 6-3. The Hawks took five of the next eight points to close the gap and bring the score to 9-8.
Purdue Fort Wayne answered with a six-point run to take a convincing 15-8 advantage. With their backs against the wall, the Hawks answered with their own run of six thanks to three attacking errors by the Mastodons bookended by kills from Goedheer and an ace from
Logan Gieseke to bring the score to 15-14.
The comeback attempt was not meant to be as Purdue Fort Wayne pressed on to take the set 25-18 completing the sweep.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 15) as they travel to Romeoville, Ill to take on the Flyers of Lewis University for a 7:00 p.m. contest to continue their MIVA conference play.
