Box Score WILLIAMSVILLE, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team faced off with Maryville University in the nightcap, 8:30 PM contest of opening round action in the GLVC Volleyball Tournament. The Hawks dropped the match in four sets (22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 13-25) to the Saints.
Set One
Maryville jumped out to an early 6-1 advantage before QU took six of the next seven points, capped off by back-to-back kills from
Susanna Beretti, to knot the tally at 7-7. Shortly after at 12-11, a three-point run from MU pressed the lead to four at 15-11.
Down 19-15, the Hawks sandwiched two three points runs around a Saints point to regain the advantage 21-20. Maryville took four of the final five points of the set in a 25-22 victory.
Set Two
Quincy fell behind in the early stages of the second frame, trailing 7-3, but used a four-point run to deadlock it at 7-7. Kills from
Emma Wijnbergen,
Luna Van Baars and a block from
Alice Pavan supplied the run.
Later in the set, with MU leading 14-10, kills from
Erin Matzke, Beretti and Wijnbergen evened the score at 14-14. Down 17-15, the Hawks took six of the next seven points to lead it 21-18 heading down the stretch. A Saints error and kills from Matzke, Pavan and Wijnbergen gave Quincy a 25-20 winner in the second set.
Set Three
Six of the first seven points of the third set went in favor of Maryville before QU answered with five of the next seven to cut the deficit to 8-6. Shortly after at 12-11, back-to-back points gave the Hawks their first lead of the set 13-12.
Quincy held off the Saints until a three-point run at 19-19 gave MU a 22-19 edge. The Hawks used kills from Wijnbergen and Beretti to draw within one, but Maryville took three of the final four points and a 25-22 third set win.
Set Four
QU fell behind early and never found the means to get back into it, dropping 14 of 15 and the first nine points of the set to trail 14-1. Down 20-5, seven of eight points went the Hawks way to cut the lead to 21-12, but it was too little too late as Maryville took the set 25-13 and the set 3-1 to advance to the second round of the GLVC Volleyball Tournament.
Now the Hawks play the waiting game, anxiously looking forward to the NCAA Selection show on Monday (Nov. 20) to see how the chips fall in the Midwest Region.
