Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's soccer team hosted its senior day on Sunday (Oct. 8). The Hawks got back in the win column with a 1-0 victory over Southwest Baptist.
The Hawks struck fast with two shots in the first ten minutes. After the first half of the half, it was very apparent that both teams were hungry for a win on Sunday. Play bounced back and forth until, finally, captain
Ella Wolfard slipped the ball under the Southwest Baptist goalkeeper to put the Hawks up 1-0. The Hawks had another great opportunity at net when the ball bounced off the left post out into the box, but was secured by the goalkeeper before a Hawk could get a touch.
The second half brought more back-and-forth action from both teams, but much more offense from the Bearcats. The increase in offense was no match for freshman
Eva Norris, as she had multiple big-time saves in her shutout. Just 13 minutes into the second half, Norris faced a through ball breakaway from the Bearcats, parrying the ball wide. Norris had another big time save in the 64th and 75th minutes. Her game-saving save, however, came with .5 seconds left on the clock, when the Bearcats had a one-touch finish opportunity that Norris snatched out of the air. Norris finished the game with 12 saves, a new career high.
Four seniors were recognized for senior day:
Claire Macy,
Sophie Shackleton,
Madison Ledbetter, and
Grace Ledbetter.
Sunday's win improves the Hawks to ninth place in the GLVC after half of the conference season. The Hawks will travel to Kansas City, Missouri next weekend to take on Rockhurst and William Jewell.
