QUINCY, Ill. - In a short change of pace from its GLVC conference schedule, the Quincy University women's volleyball team played host to neighbor, Hannibal La-Gragne University at Pepsi Arena on Wednesday evening (Oct. 4). The Hawks hit over .500 collectively for the match with just six errors in a three set sweep (25-15, 25-16, 25-11) of the Trojans.
Set One:
Quincy jumped out to a a 6-2 advantage thanks to HLGU errors and kills from Erin Matke,
Susanna Beretti and
Fleur Merjenburgh. Hannibal La-Grange worked it back to a draw at 7-7 before QU took five of the next seven points to pull ahead 12-9.
Later in the set up 16-13, the Hawks took nine of the final 11 points to close out the first set in style 25-15. Quincy committed four errors while holding its opponents to a negative hitting percentage in the dominant first set.
Set Two:
QU pressed another early advantage in the second set, taking a 5-1 lead on two HLGU errors and kills from Matzke and
Sydney Clark. Up three at 11-8, a three-point run, featuring kills from Beretti and Clark along with an error, pressed the advantage to 14-8.
Shortly after at 20-15, kills from Matzke, Beretti and
Alice Pavan as part of a three-point run, put the Hawks up big 23-16 late in the set. Following a Hannibal La-Grange point, a kill from Matzke and an error finished off a 25-16 winner in the second set.
Set Three:
Four-Straight points put the Hawks up 4-0 to open the final set. The Trojans got back to within two at 6-4, prompting Quincy to put together a five-point run, followed up by a six-point run to take 11 of the next 12 and and open up a huge 17-5 advantage.
QU never committed an error in final set as it rolled on to a 25-11 victory supplied by a ridiculous .750 hitting percentage, along with a 3-0 sweep of the match.
The Hawks resume their GLVC conference schedule with a 3:00 PM showdown with University of Illinois-Springfield on Saturday (Oct. 7) in Springfield, IL.
