SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Hawks resumed their GLVC schedule of play making the short trip east to take on the Prairie Stars of University of Illinois-Springfield. Quincy swept UIS (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) to press the match win-streak to 13 and remain undefeated in GLVC play.
Set One:
QU used a few Prairie Star errors and a kill from Emma Wijbergen to open a 4-1 advantage. UIS returned the favor shortly after, down 7-6, three-straight Hawk errors made it 9-7.
Later in the set, Springfield furthered the lead to three at 15-12, before Quincy took seven of the next eight points on three-point and five-point runs to storm back to a 20-16 lead.
The Prairie Starts hung around until the very end, drawing within one at 24-23, but a kill from Wijnbergen sealed a 25-23 first set winner.
Set Two:
A kill from
Erin Matzke, a Springfield error and back-to-back aces from
Brianna Merkel put QU ahead 4-0. UIS drew back within one at 12-11, prompting a three-point Quincy run to replenish the lead 15-11.
The Prairie Stars knotted the score at 16-16, but couldn't keep up with Quincy's form down the stretch as the Hawks took the final three points, up 22-20, to finish out a 25-20 victory in the second set.
Set Three:
Kills from Matzke, Wijnbergen and
Luna Van Baars, along with a couple of UIS errors put Quincy ahead 5-2. The Prairie Stars fought back to take a 8-7 lead, before a three-point run from QU gave the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish at 10-8.
Shortly after, Quincy used a four-point run to lead 16-11. A Springfield error along with an ace from
Susanna Beretti and a kill from Wijnbergen.
The Prairie Stars never drew closer than three, as QU went on to complete the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third set.
The Hawks make the trek to Hammond IN next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 13-14) for the Midwest Region Crossover, pitting Quincy against opponents from the GLIAC and GMAC conferences.
