Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University football team competed in its first conference match Saturday afternoon (September 30) against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. After trailing by four at halftime, the Hawks pushed during the fourth quarter for a Homecoming weekend victory.
First Quarter
The Hawks are now three for five in being the first to score in the contest, each of those games resulting in a victory. Jacob Duke's punt block in Southwest Baptist's first drive led to the Hawks first touchdown.
Drake Davis found
Hans Wisnewski short in the end zone to put the Hawks up seven. The Hawks defense shoved in the first, ending the quarter 7-0 in favor of the Hawks.
Second Quarter
The Bearcats were eager to get on the board and converted their first play of the second quarter into a touchdown. Quincy found some trouble on their next drive when a bad snap led to a fumble recovery and 31-yard touchdown run for the Bearcats. Quincy, now on the chase, decided to attempt a field goal after two unsuccessful drives. The 14-yard attempt was good.
Southwest Baptist responded with another quick touchdown forcing the Hawks to chase again, 21-10. The following drive proved successful for the Hawks as Davis found
Travis Isaac on a 26-yard pass into the end zone.
Third Quarter
Quincy found its lone touchdown of the game after a deep punt pinned Southwest Baptist in its own goal zone.
Teon Dollard rushed for four to put Quincy back in the lead.
Fourth Quarter
Almost identical to the start of the second quarter, the Bearcats tied up the game in the first drive. Quincy responded well. Davis found
Marlin Washington on a deep pass to the Southwest Baptist 8-yard line. Three 2-yard rushes from
JQ Brown converted into the Hawks's winning touchdown. Davis found Washington again later in the quarter on a deep pass to secure the win 38-33.
Saturday's win puts the Hawks 4-1 on the season, the best start since 1994. During the 1994 season, Quincy went 8-1 and finished as the Illini-Badger Conference champions. The Hawks look to continue their success this coming weekend when they travel to Truman State University on October 7
