QUINCY, Ill. – Women's soccer had a thrilling five-goal second half on their way to a 5-3 win over Missouri S&T on Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon in the GLVC opener.
Less than four minutes into the game, the Miners controlled a 2-0 lead. S&T held that lead until Lexi Porchia played the ball to Lauren Crane who then found Aliyah Rottger who scored her first collegiate goal just 22 seconds into the second half.
Quincy pushed the pace and earned a penalty kick but a stop was made on the attempt by Crane.
S&T earned two corner kicks in the 55th minute, but the QU defense was able to snuff out the chances by the Miners.
Rottger connected to Jessica Felix in the 60th minute and she let the ball bounce on the turf and then scored on a volley toward the far post to tie the game at 2-2. Afterward, Sophia Bonaldi entered the game for Felix, and she found Lauren Crane in the 65th minute as she finished the shot to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead.
QU held a one goal lead until the 77th minute when S&T's Sydney Gratz drove a shot well-outside the box to tie the score at 3-3.
In the 85th minute, QU's Claire Macy played a ball into the box that resulted in a game-winning goal as QU took a 4-3 lead.
Less than thirty seconds later, Felix received another great ball from Rottger, and she finished the touch to make the score 5-3 in favor of QU with five minutes left.
The most goals scored in a game by QU last spring was three, but they exceeded that with a five-goal performance in the second 45-minute period alone today.
Five goals today was the most QU has had in a game since the 2018 season when they scored five goals against Maryville in a 5-2 win (10-19-18). Current Hawk Lauren Crane scored two goals in that game. Quincy also scored six goals against Drury (10-14-18) in that season just five days prior to the Maryville game. Crane had two goals in that game as well along with an assist.
