Box Score 4 The Quincy University men's and women's tennis teams played three matches in two days over the weekend. The Hawks first traveled to Fulton, Missouri to take on Baker University and William Woods, then headed to Springfield to face the Prairie Stars on Sunday. Both squads defeated Baker before falling to both William Woods and UIS.
The Hawks defeated Baker 6-1 on both the men's and women's side.
Laila Leist-Alston swept her number one's match 6-0, 6-0.
Steffi Lao won in the number two spot 6-2, 6-0, and her sister Nicole also won in the three spot 6-1, 6-2. Makala Hampton and
Noni Updyke rounded out the singles wins as Hampton won her matchup 6-4, 6-5, and Updyke won 6-3, 6-3. In doubles, the pairing of Hampton and
Steffi Lao won 6-1, Leist-Alston and
Nicole Lao defeated their opponents 6-0, and
Annie McGinnis and Updyke won 7-6, 3 to round out the doubles sweep.
On the men's side,
Samuele Contestabile won the number one's match 6-1, 6-0.
Ivan Mimica won his number two's match 6-2, 6-2, and
Ettore Pavesi won a intense battle in the three spot 3-6, 6-2, 11-9.
Luca Cantale and
Zach Willing rounded out the singles wins for QU in the four and five spot. Cantale defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-0, and Willing won 6-2, 6-3. The Hawks swept the doubles action as well with
Erik Weiler and
Zach Willing turning in a 7-5 victory in the first doubles match. Contestabile and Cantale swept their pairing 6-0, and the team of
Brenden Everhart and Sebastin Gomez wrapped up the first match with a 6-2 victory.
The rest of the weekend was tough sledding as the only QU victories came from non-competes against UIS. The Hawks were swept by William Woods who is ranked 6th in the NAIA in women's tennis and ranked 22 on the men's side. The Hawks were also swept on the men's side by Illinois Springfield in a non-conference meeting while the women fell 5-2.
QU will open up GLVC play this Saturday when they take on Truman State at Reservoir Park this Saturday (April 3).
