QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team found themselves down a goal after the first half of Friday (March 19) night's GLVC contest with Lewis University, but the Hawks stormed back with two goals in the final forty-five to earn a 2-1 win.
The first half was a defensive struggle as both teams combined for just four shots and committed a total of 11 fouls. The Flyers broke through in the 35th minute with a goal in the lower right part of the net to go up 1-0. This was Lewis' only shot in the first half.
After the halftime break, Quincy's defense continued to stymie the Flyers' attack while also ratcheting up the offensive pressure. The Hawks got a break in the 60th minute when Lewis was called for a handball in their defensive box.
Lauren Crane stepped up and buried the penalty shot to tie the score 1-1.
Both teams battled for the game-winning goal over the next twenty-three minutes, but with less than ten minutes to play, Quincy delivered the knockout blow. Sophomore midfielder
Lexi Porchia beat the keeper in the 84th minute with a perfectly placed shot in the upper left corner to put the Hawks ahead, 2-1.
Porchia's first goal of the season lifted QU to victory and snapped a two-game scoreless streak.
