Jalon White Captures First Individual NCAA National Championship In QU History; Laidler Becomes All-American

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Quincy University men's track and field team made history on Saturday afternoon (March 13) at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Jalon White sprinted his way into the Quincy University history books when he became the first QU athlete to win an individual national championship by winning the 400 meter event. Antonio Laidler also made history by becoming the first QU track & field athlete to become an All-American when he finished seventh in the 60 meter dash moments before White's event.

Laidler made it to Saturday's final after sprinting a blazing time of 6.82 on Friday. The freshman from Belle Glade, Florida finished seventh on the national stage with a final time of 6.89. With his top-eight finish, Laidler became the first-ever Quincy University track athlete to earn All-American honors.

Shortly after the 60 meter event, the two-heat 400 meter event was held. Freshman Jalon White ran in the second, four-man heat after securing the fastest preliminary time of 47.67 on Friday.

White followed up that performance with one for the record books during Saturday's final as he surged from the middle of the pack in the final lap. The freshman from Toronto, Canada kicked it into gear and raced ahead of the field out of the final turn. Down the straightaway, White found himself in front, and crossed the finish line in a final time of 47.36.

This time shattered his previous personal and school record time of 47.66, as it was also the fastest time in the entire event.

Once the time became official, White knew he had become a national champion and let out a victorious roar. It was the first time any QU athlete has won a NCAA National Championship in an individual event in the university's 161-year history.
